Simon Osborn
Senior Coach

Simon Osborn brings a wealth of professional football experience to Volenti Academy, having enjoyed a distinguished playing career spanning the Premier League, Football League and senior non-league football.

A product of Crystal Palace’s youth academy, Simon progressed through the ranks at Selhurst Park alongside future England manager Gareth Southgate and fellow Volenti coach Bobby Bowry. He was part of the Crystal Palace squad that won the First Division title in 1993/94, before moving to Reading, where he helped the club reach the First Division play-off final at Wembley.

His performances attracted significant attention, earning him a £1.1 million transfer to Premier League side Queens Park Rangers in 1995. Just months later, he secured another £1 million move to Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he spent six seasons and became an established member of the first-team squad.

Simon subsequently represented clubs including Gillingham and Walsall, before moving into coaching and management, with experience at Bromley and Margate.

Having experienced football at the highest domestic level, Simon understands first-hand the technical standards, discipline, mentality and commitment required to build a successful career in the professional game.

Simon has been a key part of Volenti Academy’s Croydon coaching programme since its early years, working alongside his former Crystal Palace teammate Bobby Bowry. Together, they bring decades of professional football knowledge to the development of the next generation of young players.

Coaching Philosophy

Simon’s coaching philosophy is built around a straightforward principle: master the basics, work hard and never stop improving.

Drawing on his experience in the Premier League and professional football, Simon believes that strong technical foundations, consistent effort and the right attitude are essential for any young player with ambitions of progressing in the game.

He places particular emphasis on developing the fundamental skills of football, encouraging players to become comfortable on the ball, make intelligent decisions and understand the importance of doing the simple things well.

His coaching is honest, demanding and focused on long-term improvement. He challenges players to take responsibility for their development, develop strong training habits and approach every session with the attitude required to succeed.
