Dean brings an exceptional wealth of experience to Volenti Academy, having enjoyed a distinguished career at the highest levels of English football as a professional player, coach, manager and sporting director.

A former Premier League defender with Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace, Dean made over 400 senior appearances during a professional playing career spanning more than a decade. Having worked under some of football’s most respected managers, including Terry Venables, he developed a deep understanding of the technical ability, discipline and mentality required to succeed at the highest level.

Following his playing career, Dean established himself as a highly respected coach and football professional. A UEFA Pro Licence holder — the highest coaching qualification in European football — he has worked across professional academies, first-team coaching and management, including roles at Watford, Crystal Palace, Reading, Southend United and Northampton Town.

His experience includes working alongside Brendan Rodgers, Slaviša Jokanović and Quique Sánchez Flores, gaining invaluable insight into elite coaching, player development and the meticulous preparation required in Premier League football.

Dean is currently Sporting Director at Coventry City, having played an important role in the club’s recruitment strategy and squad development during its successful promotion to the Premier League.

Alongside his senior professional responsibilities, Dean manages Volenti Academy’s St Albans programme, bringing the knowledge and standards of elite football directly to aspiring young players.

His passion for coaching, exceptional attention to detail and ability to develop players of different ages and abilities make him an invaluable member of the Volenti coaching team.

Dean Austin’s coaching philosophy centres on mastering the “Brilliant Basics” — the fundamental skills, habits and understanding that provide the foundations for success at every level of football.

Having worked with players and managers at the highest level, Dean understands that exceptional performances are built on consistently executing the simple things well. His coaching places enormous emphasis on technical precision, intelligent decision-making, discipline and attention to detail.

Dean believes that every training session should have a clear purpose. He challenges players to understand not just what they are doing, but why, helping them develop the confidence and football intelligence to make better decisions on the pitch.
